Lorraine Sutton fell for “old time dancing” at the early age of 8. The flow of people, the patterns and the music of the singing square dance, Oh Johnny Oh, was her first conscious encounter of dance as a form of community expression. Lorraine enjoyed many a fun weekend in Gimli, Manitoba, starting in 1974, at the international folk dance camp, exploring the range of dance from Romanian to Israeli, Turkish to Square dance and was introduced there to Quebecquois step dance.
In Ontario, Lorraine was one of the coordinators who revived the Toronto Country Dance in 1983 and has been house caller for the Fiddlefern Dance in Owen Sound. Lorraine loves to dance and calls contras, squares, circles and long ways sets, as well as some Irish and middle eastern folk dances.
Lorraine has called at the Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo series dances and at many folk festivals, weddings and other special events. She’d love to revive the tradition of country dancing at ordinations and almost any other community event.
Lorraine loves to work with the terrific musicians including Ann Lederman and friends, Murphy’s Law, Tramp Steamer, Ann Lindsay, Back Up & Push, Flapjack, and others .
Lorraine’s danced at Pinewoods, Augusta, Buffalo Gap, NEFA, the Flurries, River Rendezvous, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Vancouver etc.
